Wilfrid Laurier University
Wilfrid Laurier University's Bachelor of Music Therapy (BMT) program is the only undergraduate degree in music therapy offered in Ontario. The program combines technical musicianship with in-depth therapeutic training and extensive hands-on experience, preparing students to design and implement music-based interventions tailored to clients' needs and goals. Students engage with diverse client interactions, ranging from children with developmental or physical disabilities to older adults with dementia, through supervised clinical training and community placements. The curriculum includes courses in clinical improvisation, case studies, therapeutic theories, and medical music therapy, along with two years of supervised group and individual placements. By the fourth year, students are ready for professional practice with a 1,000-hour internship through the Canadian Association of Music Therapists (CAMT), positioning them to take the Certified Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) exam upon graduation, enabling practice in both Canada and the USA.
